Getting There
Sükhbaatar Square is the central square of Mongolia’s capital Ulaanbaatar. You can get there by car, on foot or by bus.
What to Expect
The centre of the plaza features an equestrian statue of Damdin Sükhbaatar, while a large colonnade monument dedicated to Chinggis Khaan, as well as to Ögedei Khan and Kublai Khan, dominates the square’s north face directly in front of the Saaral Ordon.
History
Throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the grounds of the present day government palace and public square were largely occupied by a temple-monastery-palace complex (the Yellow Palace), which acted as the official residence of Mongolia’s spiritual leader, the Jebtsundamba Khutughtu.
The temple and its environs were called Zuun Khuree or Eastern Monastery to differentiate it from the Gandantegchinlen Monastery and its surrounding settlements to the west.
