What to Expect
The State National Russian Drama Theater is named after Chingiz Aitmatov (formerly Nadezhda Konstantinovna Krupskaya). It is the pride and cultural heritage of Kyrgyzstan.
The theatre remains true to the high aesthetic ideals of academic art and at the same time remains modern, open to bold experiments and innovative artistic solutions. The theatre actively participates in international cultural programs and prestigious festivals. Theatre performances successfully tour the country and abroad.
The theatre building is located in the very heart of Bishkek, in an oak park. The former building was rebuilt and remodelled many times. Oak Park is perhaps the most beautiful place in Bishkek. Nearly a century-old oaks, planted by the founders of the city, grow freely and spread here. In the shade of the oaks rise a large building.
The Drama Theater building was designed by architect A. Albanski in 1972. Today the building of the Russian theatre is a modern complex capable of accommodating more than 600 spectators. The hall and stage of the theatre are perfect for mass cultural events.

History
In 1935 the government of the Kyrgyz SSR adopted a resolution on the creation of a Russian drama theatre. The main goals and objectives at that time were – acquaintance of the provincial audience with the world’s best dramatic works, education of tastes, assistance in the creation of the Kyrgyz national theatre. V.G. Feldman was appointed the chief director of the theater, the basis of the troupe was GITIS graduates, People’s Artists of the USSR N.N. Litovtsev and V.A. Orlov.
The theatre was opened on the site of the Edison cinema, which was built in 1914 with 400 seats, after the revolution it was renamed Progress. On November 6, 1935, the first play “Capital” was staged based on the play by E. Yankovsky (about the builders of the Moscow Metro), directed by GITIS graduate V. Vasiliev, who later became People’s Artist of the Kyrgyz SSR.
The status of the National Theater was received on August 2, 2007 by decree of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic and was renamed the State National Russian Drama Theater. In 2008, the State National Russian Drama Theater was named after the master of world literature Chingiz Aitmatov.
