Gaochang Ancient City, located in Turpan offers a glimpse into Xinjiang’s rich past. With a history spanning over a thousand years, Gaochang was once a prosperous oasis city along the Silk Road. The city’s ruins showcase its former grandeur, with remnants of ancient walls, gates, temples and residential areas. Situated along the northern branch of the Silk Road, it served as a crucial stop for caravans travelling between China and Central Asia. Due to this strategic location near fertile oases, Gaochang became a thriving centre for trade, commerce, and cultural exchange.

Getting There

Gaochang Ancient City is approximately 45 kilometres from Turpan. The best way to get there is by taxi, private driver or guided tour.

What to Expect

Walking through the site, visitors can envision the layout of the former city, including the wide streets still visible today, intricate architecture and remnants of once-bustling Silk Road marketplaces. There are several key attractions that form the site, including the Astana Tombs, located nearby, which provide insights into the burial customs and artefacts of the city’s former inhabitants.

The Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves, adorned with well-preserved murals and Buddhist statues, are also worth exploring. The site’s huge area means that visitors are advised to spend ample time exploring the ruins on foot.
