Visit Guide to Fayaz Tepa Ruins

Fayaz Tepe was a Buddhist monastery near modern Termez. Important and beautiful frescoes and sculptures have been unearthed here; you can see them in the history museums of Termez and Tashkent.

Getting There

Located 15 km west of Termez off the main M39 highway. Bus number 15 runs past the turn-off to Fayaz Tepe, from where it is a 1 km walk without shade. Travel agencies organize transportation with tour guide or go to the by taxi.

What to Expect

Today, you can visit the archaeological site to get a feel for the place and see the remnants of the old stupa and the excavated monks’ cells. Bonus: a slight frisson from viewing the Afghan border so close by. In the early centuries of our era, Buddhism benefited from the size of the Kushan empire, connecting Termez with far-flung cities like Peshawar and Turpan. Under Kanishka the Great, Buddhism spread from the south to the north, and from the valley of the Oxus along the Silk Road to China and, eventually, Japan.

History

Vihara type Buddhist monastery temple, dating back to the 1st 3rd century AD. It is located in 1 km northeast from Kara-Tepe.

Monastery consists of 3 parts, that is, the central part is square shaped patio yard temple and 20 rooms, which were situated around surroundings household and monastery parts. The total area of the complex is approximately 1.5 thousandm². In the chambers, in monastery square, clergy and monastery students lived and also there have been studyrooms and halls and dormitories for pilgrims. On the walls of the rooms, shelves for lamp light fixtures were worked. Under the walls of contains rooms, Buddha status and frames were erected to install them.

Fayaz-tepa was destroyed as a result of Iranian aggression.
