The Atyrau region is located in the Caspian lowland, to the north and east of the Caspian Sea, between the lower reaches of the Volga in the northwest and the Ustyurt plateau in the southeast. The area of the region is 118.6 thousand km² (4.35% of the total area of Kazakhstan), population 645,280 people (2020). The region borders in the west with the Astrakhan region of Russia, in the north and in the north-east of the West Kazakhstan region, in the east with the Aktobe region, in the south with the Mangistau region.

The main attractions of the region
  • Monuments: Sultan Beybarys, Kurmangazy Sagirbayuly, Dina Nurpeisova, Khiuaz Dospanova, Fariza Ongarsynova, etc.
  • Pedestrian bridge: In 2001, the longest 551 meter pedestrian bridge across the Ural River was built in Atyrau, which is listed in the Guinness Book of Records (pedestrian bridge in two continents – Europe and Asia)

In the Atyrau region annually the oil and gas exhibition “Global Oil & Gas Atyrau” is held, in which representatives from more than 150 countries of the world take part.
