Getting There
Buses №5, 88, and 125 stop at the “Puppet Theatre” bus stop. It will take you 5 minutes by a walk to reach the museum from there.
Buses №10, № 65 and 18 stop at the “Nizami Garden” bus stop. It will take you 2 minutes by a walk to reach the museum from there.
You can also arrive at the “Sahil” or “Icherisheher” metro station and walk till the museum about 10 minutes.
What to Expect
The National Museum of Azerbaijan Literature named after Nizami Ganjavi, a genius poet and thinker of Azerbaijan, is a museum in Baku, established in 1939. It is located near the entrance of Icheri Sheher, not far from Fountains Square.
The museum is considered one of the greatest and richest treasuries of Azerbaijani culture. Magnificent building attracts attention of everyone with its blue majolica on the fasade where monuments of six outstanding representatives of Azerbaijan literature – Fizuli, Vagif, M.F.Akhundov, Natavan, J.Mammadguluzade an J.Jabbarli are erected.
History
The building where the museum is located was built in 1850 as a one-storeyed caravanserais. In 1915, the building was given to the “Metropol” hotel, and the second storey was rebuilt. Then, in 1918-1920s, workers of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic lived and worked in the building; in 1920-30s the labor union of Azerbaijan was located in the building.
On November 1, 1939, a memorial museum named after Nizami was created in the building in connection with the 800th anniversary of the poet Nizami Ganjavi. Nizami’s main poetical work, for which he is best known, is a set of five long narrative poems known as the Khamsa. Khamsa consists of 5 poems: ‘The Treasury or Storehouse of Mysteries’, ‘Khosrow and Shirin’, ‘Layla and Majnun’, ‘The Book of Alexander’, ‘The Seven Beauties’.
