Anig village is 28 kilometers from Gusar’s city center, on the right bank of the Gusarchay, on the Shahdag road. The village was mentioned in the form of Anikhkend in an 1843 document, and it is believed to be derived from the word “niq,” which means “dwelling” in Lezgi. The road leading to Anig village is asphalt, but the road within the village is rocky. In the winter, the roads in the mountains can be treacherous. The nationally significant archaeological monument – fortress walls in Anig village is one of the Middle Ages historical relics on the territory of the Gusar region.

Anig Castle, located 1100 meters above sea level behind the Salavat span on the right bank of the Gusarchay river, is also known as “Anih”, “Enig”, and “Anikh”. The Anig castle was once located to the south of the current village. “Anig Castle” is a one-of-a-kind location in Gusar that resembles an 8-angled prism. Some sources refer to Aniq Mosque as the “Taj Mahal Mosque” because it was built in the architectural style of the “Taj Mahal” in India.

The man who built this mosque between 1911 and 1921 is said to have seen the “Taj Mahal” on a trip to India and decided to build a similar mosque in his village. The mosques of the Gusar region are architecturally distinct from those built in other regions of Azerbaijan.
