The Carpet Museum contains a rich collection of Turkmen carpets from the medieval through to the 20th century, including over 1000 carpets from the 18th and 19th centuries.. One will see two sided carpets where the sides differ in color and pattern. The world’s biggest carpet is on display. It’s well worth a visit!

What to Expect

Occupying a total area of 13,400 m² the Turkmen Carpet Museum is one of the cultural centers of Turkmenistan with about 2000 carpet exhibits, including many rare and one-of-a-kind ones. As an example, the museum has the smallest carpet product, designed in form of a key case, as well as the world’s biggest handmade carpet with a size of 14×21 m.

History

The museum was established by decree of the President of Turkmenistan in March 20, 1993 with the aim of preserving, reviving and creatively developing the time-honored tradition of Turkmen carpet weaving.

The Turkmen Carpet Day is annually celebrated in Turkmenistan, and the holiday venue is traditionally the Turkmen Carpet Museum.
