Visit Guide to Cultural Museum Gulmit

Gulmit museum is located in Gulmit valley upper Hunza Gojal about 138 km towards north from Gilgit. The museum was early a Wakhi house that has now been converted into a museum. Wooden shelves lined the walls of the traditional house wherein weapons, jewelry and traditional cloth are placed.

Getting There

Gulmit Museum can be accessible local transport or can hire a car on rent on  daily basis.

What to Expect

Wooden shelves lined the walls of the traditional house wherein weapons, jewelry and traditional cloths are placed. Artefacts of war, musical instruments, cooking utensils, traditional clothing used for trekking, etc. could be seen all over the place. On one pillar hung a huge horn of an ibex, a symbol of pride for hunters. There were traditional carpets all over the floor.

A complete experience in Gulmit museum would have to include scenery, culture, some history, and of course, a lot of authentic and local Hunza food (traditionally known for its long life properties).

History

Raja Bhadur Khan, the father of Raja Hussain, built the museum in the mid-1980s when he felt the need to preserve the cultural heritage of the region. The artefacts were donated by the people of the valley and some came from his own family collection.
