The Independence Monument is a monument located in Ashgabat. It was erected in 2001 to the tenth anniversary of the Independence of Turkmenistan.

Getting There

Perfectly located, the Independence Monument can be reached either by public transport or by taxi.

What to Expect

The monument is a 118-meter column crowned with a gilded crescent with five stars, a symbol of the five largest Turkmen tribes’ unity. The design of the monument was inspired by traditional Turkmen tents and the traditional headgear worn by Turkmen girls.

The building houses the Museum of Independence, which displays exhibits associated with the origins of the country’s sovereignty formation.

History

The monument erected in 2001 to the tenth anniversary of the Independence of Turkmenistan, is one of the largest of its kind in the entire world. Covering an area of more than 80,000 m², the monument sits in the middle of a landscaped park, with numerous water fountains and pools.

27 statues of Turkmen heroes surround the centerpiece of the monument and the golden statue of Turkmenistan’s first president Saparmurat Niyazov, stands in front of the monument.
