Visit Guide to Hisor Madrasa Museum

The Hisor Madrasa Museum is a brick building with a portal entrance crowned with a dome. As you enter, you see a wide courtyard surrounded by small rooms. The library has been preserved in the building and the History Museum is located there. More than 3,200 artefacts found during excavations in and around the town of Hisor are housed here.

Getting There

The Hisor complex is situated about 25km from Dushanbe. The easiest way to get there is by taxi. Shared taxis are cheaper and a great way to meet new people too. Once in Hisor there are several travel guide companies, and the reserve is quite well signposted.

What to Expect

The Old Madrasa presently serves as a museum. It features a central courtyard bordered by former student rooms, which nowadays have exhibitions on display about Tajik culture and history. The site is a photogenic place that is certainly worth the visit if you have some time to spare. From the madrasa and museum it is possible to visit the nearby town of Hisor, which is a bustling place and has an authentic bazaar.

History

The site is of significant historical importance as one of the key learning centres in the region. At the beginning of the 20th century about 100-150 students studied there.  Teaching only ended in 1921.
