Visit Guide to Mahabat Khan Mosque

Mahabat Khan Mosque dates back to the Mughal era and is one of the oldest places to visit in Peshawar. Named after Governor Mahabat Khan, it got built-in 1630. During Sikh’s rule, the minarets of the mosque were used for hanging prisoner’s too. When the Soviet invasion took place, the tribal elders used to assemble in the mosque.

History

The Mahabat Khan Mosque is one of the most iconic sights and tourist attractions in Peshawar. The white marble faced is magnificent indeed. Two tall minarets flank the hall area. The prayer area is present on the west side. There are three sections inside the hall. You will surely admire the 6 smaller decorative minarets that flank the 5 arched entryways. Two additional minarets also flank the set of 6 minarets. The 3 fluted domes cap the prayer hall.

Another gorgeous element is that the roofline is embellished with man merlons. The concave molding also covers the white marble facade of the mosque. The 3 central arched portals have been embellished with muqarnas on the top. A network of ribs decors the outermost arches. They are made of plaster and stucco.

Additionally, the vegetal motifs decorate its archways along with the upper curves. The mosque is worthy enough to visit as you will appreciate the exterior and interior panels. Which are embellished with floral motifs and Quranic calligraphy. The geometric and floral designs also decorate the interior of the prayer hall.
