The Spirit of Tengri is a contemporary ethnic music festival held annually since 2013 in Almaty, Kazakhstan. In 2017, it was first held in the capital of Kazakhstan – Astana. The festival is an annual open-air event that joins world-renowned stars of ethnic music on the Kazakh soil. The Spirit of Tengri festival is a way to unite and accumulate the contribution of the contemporary musicians and preserve the heritage of the ancestors.

What to Expect

June 8, 2013 – The first festival The Spirit of Tengri was held on the square in front of the Mega Alma-Ata mall. 12 bands from different parts of Eurasia took part in the outdoor event.

June 8, 2014 – The second festival The Spirit of Tengri was held on the Abay Square in front of the Palace of the Republic. For the first time, the festival was attended by groups representing not only the Eurasian continent. The concert brought together ethnic performers from 10 countries, and gathered more than 8 thousand spectators.

In November 2014, the presentation of the special two-disc DVD edition The Spirit of Tengri 2014 took place.

June 6, 2015 – the third festival was held in front of the Palace of the Republic, musicians from 11 countries participated.

June 4, 2016 – the fourth festival was held on the Abay Square in front of the Palace of the Republic, which was dedicated to the 1000th anniversary of Almaty. Thirteen bands from nine countries of the world performed.

May 20, 2017 – The 5th Anniversary of the International Festival of Contemporary Ethnic Music The Spirit of Tengri 2017 took place.

June 23, 2017 – The Spirit of Astana, the first festival of contemporary ethnic music, was held on the square in front of the Baiterek monument. 14 musical groups demonstrated their creativity to the guests of the event.

June 2, 2018 – the sixth festival The Spirit of Tengri was held on the Abay Square in front of the Palace of the Republic in Almaty, 11 amazing ethnoworld groups performed.

July 6, 2018 – The Spirit of Astana was held as part of the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the capital of the Republic of Kazakhstan, on the City Day, on the square in front of the Baiterek monument, where more than 120 musicians from 23 countries performed.

On May 26-27, 2019, the seventh festival The Spirit of Tengri was held on Abay Square in Almaty. The festival was attended by musicians from 16 countries – Russia, Estonia, India, Mali, Mozambique, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Uzbekistan, the Republic of Niger, Algeria, Egypt, Iran, Ukraine, Spain and the USA. The participants performed with a repertoire in ethno-rock, ethno-jazz, ethno-funk, ethno-pop, groove, New Age and others.

The Spirit of Tengri festival is famous for its artisan fair, where one can buy clothes, shoes, jewelry, musical instruments, and handmade souvenirs.

History

In 2012, the project was established by Tengri FM radio. During the year, social network viewers cast their votes for musicians performing ethno music in a modern style, then the besties hit parade took place on the CTV channel. These musicians took part in the first festival of contemporary ethnic music.
