Getting There
Situated in Arkhangai region, the lake is about 600km west of Ulaanbataar. The village of Tariat is the stopping-off point for the national park and takes around 12 hours to reach from Ulaanbaatar. To get to the lake from Tariat involves either a two-hour walk or a local taxi.
What to Expect
Tsagaan Nuur is all about getting out among Mongolia’s pristine nature while experiencing local culture as you camp lakeside in a ger. Depending on the season it’s a good spot for swimming and boating, as well as fishing and walks around its shore. Making up part of the national park is the nearby Khorgo Uul volcano that you can hike up to its crater rim for great views.
History
The lake was formed by lava flows from a volcanic eruption many millennia ago.
Facilities Available
At the national park’s gateway town of Tariat you can find accommodation, basic supermarkets, guanz (canteens) and buses to Ulaanbaatar.
At the lake itself there are plenty of ger camps.
