Visit Guide to Hisor Caravanserai

Caravanserai were situated every twenty five kilometres or so along the Silk Road, as places where travelling traders and other wanderers could spend the night. This mediaeval guest house, also known as Khishtin Caravanserai, was built in 1808 next to the Kukhna madrasa. Khishtin means “made of brick”, which is what the house is mostly made from.

Getting There

The Hisor complex is situated about 25km from Dushanbe. The easiest way to make the short journey there is by taxi. Shared taxis are cheaper. Once in Hisor there are several travel guide companies, and the caravanserai is well signposted.

What to Expect

The original caravanserai building remains well preserved at Hisor. Its original atmosphere, with busy shops, stables and sleeping quarters, travellers from Europe and China carrying all sorts of goods to be traded, can easily be visualised.
