Visit Guide to Karakhan Mausoleum

The mausoleum is located in the city of Taraz. The entrance sign is engraved with the fundamental faith statements in Islam: “There is no god but Allah, Muhammad is His Messenger.” A new mausoleum was built on the site of the mausoleum ruins in 1906.

Getting There

Located on Ybyraev Street, the mausoleum can be reached by city buses and cars.

There is a garden next to the historic mausoleum where you can enjoy the art of medieval architecture.

History

The mausoleum was erected over the grave of Shah Mahmud Karakhan, one of the outstanding personalities of the Karakhanid dynasty. From 1836 to 1936, local residents called the city of Taraz “Aulieata” in honor of Karakhan. The main facade of the mausoleum is decorated with brick patterns. Excavations in 1961 showed that about 30 different terracotta were used to decorate the mausoleum.
