What to Expect

The national gallery offers a diverse collection of artworks, including paintings, sculptures, and applied arts, spanning different periods and styles, with traditional masterpieces as well as contemporary works by local artists on display.

An added attraction is a superb coin collection. It contains a piece of almost all coins ever to be found in Uzbekistan, across historical eras. Indian, Chinese, Greek, Kushan and Roman coins are on display besides Mongol, Persian and Timurid issues from medieval times.

History

The Art Gallery of Uzbekistan is a relatively young museum, mainly displaying paintings from the late 19th century to our time. It is based on National Bank for Foreign Economic Affairs of Uzbekistan (NBU) paintings collection.

The museum itself was opened for the Independence Day of the Republic in 2004 and since then has become a major international center: exhibitions of contemporary artists, sculptors and masters of decorative and applied arts are regularly held here.

Several paintings by V. Vereshchagin are the pearl of the collection of 19th century paintings. His life was connected with these places: since 1867 he became an official artist under the Governor-General of Turkestan and witnessed the capture of Samarkand. V. Vereshchagin owns a whole “Turkestan cycle” of paintings, of which several canvases are kept in the museum: “The Singing Ubek”, “Samarkand Zindan”, “Opium-Eaters”, etc. These paintings were transferred here during the Soviet time from the Tretyakov Gallery.
