This theatre is housed in a stunning historic building on Nizami Street blending baroque, rococo and Moorish elements and was built by the Mailov brothers in 1911 in an astonishingly quick 10 months. Visitors can enjoy Azerbaijani masterpieces like “Leyli and Majnun”, “Shah Ismayil”, “Koroglu” and “Arshin Mal Alan” alongside select foreign works.

Getting There

Located right in the city center, the theatre is easy to access by public transportation or personal car, but it is much better to visit as you walk around downtown Baku.

History

The theatre was built at the request of oil magnate Daniel Mailov and his brother and funded by prominent oil millionaire and philanthropist Haji Zeynalabdin Taghiyev. The theatre opened its doors in 1911 and operates up to this day.
