Visit Guide to International Mugham Centre

This is the home of mugham, a form of traditional Azerbaijani music recognised by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage element of humanity. The centre was built as a place to host, promote, preserve and popularise this musical genre. The stylish modern building is designed in the form of two tars (traditional instruments) and located on the Baku Boulevard.

Getting There

The International Mugham Center is located in the Baku Boulevard. You can reach the boulevard area by bus or by taxi, or just use the underground and cross the road from the city center near the Hilton hotel, “Sahil” metro station or any other underground.

If you want to go there by car, you can park it inside Park Boulevard Mall, Deniz Mall, or other open-air parking areas on your way. It will take you 5-10 minutes to reach the center from the parking areas by walking down the boulevard.

If you want to use a bus, buses № 5, 10, 18, 88 and 125 go to the stop “Puppet Theatre”. You need to walk for 5 minutes to reach the center from this bus stop. You can reach boulevard area using a metro, too – there is an underground in front of the “Sahil” metro station.

What to Expect

The International Mugham Center of Azerbaijan is a center of Azerbaijani arts and music aiming to promote, preserve and popularize the mugham genre of Azerbaijani music. It is located in Baku Boulevard, in downtown Baku. It hosts different events, tickets on which can be bought online from the ITicket.az website. Traditional musical instruments are displayed in the center, as well as sculptures of famous mugam figures.

History

The center was created according to the decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev dated April 6, 2005. The architects are Vahid Gasymoglu Tansu and Khaniddin Uyak Etirne Ahmed. In August of the same year, in Baku, on the territory of the coastal national park, Ilham Aliyev, his wife, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Mehriban Aliyeva and UNESCO Director General Koichiro Matsuura laid the foundation stone for the complex.”
